Larsen B are the latest Try Harder hopefuls (the label has been
a springboard for both Foals & Blood Red Shoes!) and they
offer up a 4 track 7" on mega thick black wax. I thought
it were two records glued together. The 'Marilyn' EP is charged
with super melodic pensive pop that will really appeal to fans
of Field Music & Jonquil or maybe even Arcade Fire's less
grandoise moments. The lead track is full of irresistable hooks,
a marching drum beat, dramatic arrangements and has a slightly
folk-pop edge with some burbling proggy keyboard snaking quietly
underneath. The vocal harmonies are just very classic, as they
are on 'Year of the Rat'. It really is timeless, classy pop that
I think'd get our Clint excited, like the kind of smoooth multi-layered
wonderment Cardinal were total masters of. 'If I know You' is
like a brief lost Beatles strumathon and the closer 'Tailgate'
is heavily in debt to the Beach Boys with it's star gazing vocals.
A blissed out guitar strum leads into the kind of hynotic choral
abandon much loved Danes Mew. So a lovingly rounded EP of superb
quality sounds. I look forward to more with baited breath.
